Gotham Knights dev revises Batgirl backstory to address harmful disability tropes

developer of Gotham Knights The backstory for Batgirl has been revised after fans criticized the game for using harmful handicap tropes.  In the comics, Batgirl is shot in the spine by the Joker and is then seen largely in a wheelchair.  Depending on the version of the character, she becomes the eyes and ears of the Oracle, Batman, while he is in the area.  He is able to use his technical knowledge to become a major asset to Batman without engaging in combat.  Batgirl Biography Gotham Knights Indicates that she was seriously injured in some sort of fight, although it is not clear with whom.  The biography mentions that she was able to return to active duty as Batgirl after training, with some fans taking issue as it is not as easy as doing some training to recover from a serious injury that leaves someone in a wheelchair. keeps in  This has been seen as a harmful trope across the media and it seems that Warner Bros. is aware of this.

In a recent Q&A, Gotham Knights Creative director Patrick Redding said he heard feedback from fans and worked with AbleGamers to "learn about the different types of spinal cord injuries and the potential for someone to regain mobility."  Her bio has since been revised to note that she has gone through extensive rehabilitation and training.  Redding noted that his backstory would be different from the comics and that he had physical therapy, multiple surgeries, pain management, and would wear clothes with back braces integrated into them.  Some of his rehabilitation will also be featured in the game itself.

Ultimately, it seems that Warner Bros. wanted to create a more authentic depiction of Batgirl's recovery and not get carried away through a simple training montage.  It also seems that she may be dealing with the effects of her injury within the sport, indicating that it does not go away completely after surgery and physical therapy.

Gotham Knights It is expected to release on October 25th, 2022 for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. The last-gen versions of the game were recently canceled,
